How many points are you playing and what is he bringing besides the Balrog?
It all depends on the scenario obviously, but your best bet is to feed the Balrog one model per turn and try to break him ASAP. With the Balrog weighing in at a solid 400 points, you're should to outnumber him. I'd suggest Saruman the White and perhaps even Gandalf the Grey as secondary Wizard, allied with Erebor. Try to transfix the Balrog. It isn't easy since the Balrog has 10 Will and is Resistant to Magic, but if you manage to Immobilise him, you should be able to wear him down. Khazâd Guard are especially useful for this, as they are able to wound the Balrog on 5/3's when striking two-handed, and they don't have to take a courage test to charge the Balrog. A Dwarf Ballista is also a good choice, but you'll need an Engineer Captain, and perhaps Superior Construction. The Ballista is probably your best bet, wounding the Balrog on a 4+ and causing 5 wounds if you hit him.

Depending on how many points you play and what else he takes, I'd take the following to counter the Balrog:

Saruman the White
Dwarf Ballista with Dwarf Engineer Captain
10 Khazâd Guard

Your Engineer Captain can be the hero for your Dwarven contingent. Of course, this selection of troops is just to counter the Balrog, with the Ballista taking shots and Saruman trying to Immobilise/Command the Balrog. Once Transfixed, it's up to the Khazâds to finish the (hopefully) wounded Balrog.

Good luck. ;)

Just surround it and wait until it stops rolling 6s for winning combats, then kill it. Try to get a lot of bodyguards and Aragorn with Anduril (one of the very rare occassions that Anduril actually becomes useful...)

You might have saved Blackmist a lengthy reply if you'd mentioned this when you first posted...
Drain courage with the betrayer, keep the golden king in range, break his army then wait for him to roll low on a courage test. That's if you have to kill it, otherwise just ignore it basically, it's really not that damaging unless it manages to get in combat with a hero. really just an oversized, resistant to magic troll.
War is not about who's right, but who's left.

I guess your post wasn't as "lengthy" as mine :P

6 haradrim with bows
3 watchers of karna with bows
3 harad raiders with bows

If you have no time limit shoot it, it's only D9, so requires a 6/6 with S2 :)

Otherwise sap will several times and try transfixing. Drain courage won't work because you usually cast it on 1 dice and he's resistant even after Sap Will.

I had a Balrog for a while, til I sold it... but I know from experience what hurts it and what doesn't.
1. Don't try to mob it. After I lost, (yes with the Balrog)...my friend and I kept playing for kicks. The Balrog proceeded to massacre the rest of his army  ....around 14 assorted Citadel Guards, who were all trying to tackle the demon simultaneously....So I would advise not trying to kill the walking death machine....try feeding it instead...

2. Grashnar has the right idea, feed the Balrog. That is exactly how my friend won. I didn't expect it, and probably neither will your foe. If you decide to go with this tactic, I would advise spending a section of points on haradrim spearmen or some other such cannon fodder unit. This will be the Suicide Corps. Spend the rest regularly and massacre what tiny amounts of troops he has left. :D If you are playing the "kill 3/4 of your enemies" variant, you should have a good chance of winning. Pretty much any other game type too.....
Hope this helps....

I own a balrog and its major flaw is its base... yes its base. Its HUGE! you can put an army against it. When using the balrog i mainly hold him back until my opponents heroes emerge. The balrog isnt that great when you have 5 or more against him and he doesnt roll a 6 to win the fight. he cant do anything if he doesnt win the fight. though... No one has ever killed my balrog. in fact he killed the whole fellowship by himself. but i had used him expertly.

my advice:
Dont send heroes against him. let your grunts do the work. then when they're dead, and they will be dead. let your Heroes take on whats left of the balrog. He can be intimidating i know, but it still needs to win the fight before he can do anything. and he has no might, so use that advantage.
