Hunting for Trolls
Overall, I felt the weekend was a success both in terms of my own placing and the friendliness and relaxed nature of the tournament. In the weeks running up to the event my list for Evil was pretty much set in stone. Whereas the Good list was changing every hour (literally), I eventually decided on Woodelves led by Legolas and Rumil however Woses with Ghan and Saruman were highly contemplated.
The only issue that arrived this weekend was not from the tournament organisers (or the Warhammer World staff) but from the Riverside Hotel. After paying for the HFT ticket at the WHFB GT final, I decided to book the room a few weeks later (mid February) however after the evening’s activities, including many games of perudo, we arrived at the reception to be told our room had been double booked and that a room had been reserved at the East Midlands Airport Travelodge. Half an Hour away from the Riverside. After a quick group decision we snapped up the offer once we found out a complementary breakfast was going to be arranged under the assumption that it was to be a cooked breakfast. When we arrived after a strange taxi ride with a driver who could have lied for Britain about his stories of aliens and ghost, we were processed quickly enough and went to bed…only to be woken up 6 hours later by a fire alarm. In true Wargamers spirit we laid in our beds hoping it would end - after the sudden realisation it might actually be a fire we got dressed, grabbed our cases (of course, “leave all belongings” - I don’t think so) and exited the building. Once the hullabaloo had settled we were delivered our breakfast - the uncooked hotel breakfast of UHT milk and cornflakes and croissant with jam. Anyway on with the review of games.
The lists I took were:
Legolas with Elven Cloak
14 Woodelf Warriors
14 Woodelf Warriors with Woodelf Spear
12 Woodelf Warriors with Woodelf Spear and Elf Bow
Rumil
Spider Queen (I lose 5 respect)
Morannon Orc Captain with Shield
14 Morannon Orcs with Shield
12 Mordor Orcs with Spear
2 Mordor Orcs with Spear and Shield
12 Orc Trackers
4 Wild Wargs
Ringwraith with 2/8/1 on horse
Game 1 “Storm the Camp” - Good vs. Chris Jones:
This wasn’t the first time I had seen Chris at a LoTR tournament however was the first time I had played him. I was using my woodelves vs. his small elite army consisting of the Shadowlord on horse, Shagrat Warleader, Shelob, a front-line of black guard and orcs with shield and spear supporting. I was aware how much damage the black guard would cause if they won the fight but was not prepared for the slaughter my elves would face.
The first few turns consisted of the usual advance and fire with legolas taking one-shots on the Shadowlord only to fail to do anything until it was too late - I recall making Chris use up 1 fate point. For the Shadowlord the entire game. Once combat was reached I was relying on my weight in numbers (2-1) and higher fight to pull me through. Oh what a mistake to think, the black guard removed nearly the entire frontline in the first 2 turns, however some ninja elves had managed to lure Shagrat into a wood and pin him in place with their spears. With my advantage in numbers dropping quickly the need to play for the scenario came to the fore of my mind, some crafty elves had managed to slip through a wood and were on the home run towards Chris’ Camp. Chris was unable to catch them without changing the path of Shelob (and remove her from the range of Rumil and his gang of burly elves, causing 4 wounds over 3 turns). More turns of combat progressed and I was eventually broken. By this time my two elves who remained running towards Chris’ camp were one turn away from outnumbering the single orc left to defend the home base. However the elves decided that enough was enough and with the threat of Shagrat, Shelob and a menacing orc both ran away the turn after I broke, removing any chance of me slipping through. With my might burnt and a slight mistake involving moving some bowmen out of my camp Chris was able to slip the Shadowlord through my lines and into the camp giving him the major victory.
Result: Major Loss - 1 point
Thoughts on the battle:
With the benefit of hindsight perhaps sending more than 2 elves would have been a securer option and having Legolas shoot the Shadowlord’s horse would have been the best option instead of hoping to pop him. I really enjoyed this game and despite a few bad dice (an example would be not being able to kill a particular orc warrior regardless how much I threw at it - he deserves a promotion to a Captain).
Game 2 Storm the Camp - Evil vs. Chris Knott:
After losing my first game due to a poor courage roll, my confidence had been knocked a little and when Chris put down 27 Grey company and Saruman, well I didn’t fancy my chances in this game if I am honest.
Chris set up all of his force anchored to a building just outside his camp whilst I set my entire army (except the spider queen and her warg meat shield and those nifty trackers) on the 18” line with the intention of running headlong into a hail of arrows and hot air from Saruman. As expected many died on the way however a decent enough force were able to reach the line of rangers and hold them into place. Chris had by this time manoeuvred so his force had been split into two one still anchored to the building and the other had moved around a wood with Saruman blasting orcs wildly away. Whislt all this ranger dancing had been going on the Spider Queen and her escort (who were promptly shot to ribbons) were one turn away from capturing Chris’ camp. After some uneventful combats with neither side being able to make an impact, the spider queen and her wargs and broodlings had taken Chris’ camp with the aid of a heroic combat to make sure the numbers of Chris’ troops were lower than my own in his camp. After the combat phase I counted with Chris the model difference and it suddenly seem to loom on Chris that he had forgotten about the objectives of the scenario. Had he remembered the objective earlier then I doubt I would have been able to pull of the Spider Queen stunt as over 10+ rangers were within 6” of the camp.
Unfortunately these errors can happen when at tournaments, however I commend his sportsmanship as, did everyone else as Chris was awarded the Best Sportsmanship certificate, he could have taken the loss hard but it didn’t effect his cheery disposition.
Result: Major Win - 35 points (36 total)
Thoughts on the Game:
I got lucky. As mentioned before had Chris been aware I reckon I would have lost this game to.
