'Ard Boyz list help

Postby redwulfe » Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:03 pm

I am competing in the 'Ard Boyz tournaments held by GW in my area and was wondering if people could look at my list for the second round to see if it is good or could use some improvement. For those of you who don't know 'Ard Boyz is a killing frenzy style game that focuses manly on fielding the most destructive force you can. Here is my list and my thoughts on why I field them.

Misty Mountains.
Beast caller:
This is the leader of the list there are only two selections in this category and since I am not planning on getting my common formations into much of the fighting I thought his ability to summon Giant spider cavalry was good for giving me free cave units for the game. All of his might will be spent on this and then on top of that he is a mastery two caster of ruin and wilderness. so he can entangle opponents that would get to close for comfort and also cast ruin spells which are destructive.

4 formations of goblins each with only one or two companies. probably 1c of two handed weapons, 2c of bows, 2 c of shields, and 1c of shields:
This is here to give me 4 common formation so I can get 4 rare slots as well as to fulfill the base army requirements and give me a couple of multi company formations for odd games that require them. They also give me places for the Beast caller to run to and sit in the back protecting him and then moving forward at the end of the game to claim objectives if need be. no upgrades here they need to be as cheap as possible.

4 dragons, 2 spellcasting, 2 normal:
This is the army. They are extremely hard to kill and I don't see them falling within the 3 hour limit. maybe one or two of them but not all 4. They have the dragon breath which is a 9 dice strength 10 attack and two of them also cast ruin at mastery 3 so loots of killing there. They are also good on a charge due to there 6 attacks high strength, defense and fight, as well as they charge like a flying monster so that give the large cavalry style bonus charge.

The plan for the army is to have the dragons split up and take on different formation of his force while harassing him with summoned cav and then coming in with the, hopefully forgotten common formations and gaining the objectives. This force comes in under the 2000 point cap and has forces that are extremely hard to kill.

Where does it say it's a 9 dice to attack? I don't have the book infront of me so I can't quote anything, I just remember it saying it's a shooting attack at strength 10. Since it's one model, and it's a shooting attack, I thought it was one die.

Shooting attacks still use the number of attacks the formation has. The dragon has 6, plus the bonus dice for skill of 2+ give it 9 total dice for the breath weapon.

Hm, call em Scatha, Ancalagon, Smaug and Glaurung. Then teach him not to mess with the lords of Moria.

Also, if you have the points expand the common formations by a few companies in order to increase survivability, or get a few more common formations and go for some Gundabad blackshields as back-up rares...

Thanks guys. Many people on othr forums have suggested that I move away for dragons and Balrog due to there heroic stature. Lurtz and black breath dueling make them weaker than they first apear. Since the object of the list is to put out as many extreemly hard to kill creatures as I can and then use the backup common formations to take objectives the following list is the current frame of thought.

Common formations
2c Goblins with Bows
2c Goblins with Bows
3c Goblins
2c Goblins with Bows
2c Goblins with Bows
2c Goblins
2c Goblins

Rare formaitons
6f Stone Giant
4c Blackshield Goblins
3c Blackshield Goblins

Epic Hero
1 Beastcaller
2000 pts.

Part of the reason that there is a 3c company of goblins and a 3c company of Black shields instead of two 4c of blackshields is because of the box count. when I buy the army. I can buy 7 boxes and use the shield man as the blackshields via a different pant schema. And I can buy two blisters of bowman to get the 8th company of bows that I need. The hard part now is finding a LotR mini to convert for the stone giants as the rules state that the miniature needs to be a LotR mini for conversions.

Maybe Buhrdur could pass for a giant? He's the least trollish looking of the troll models. You could maybe swap out his head from some other miniatures.

Personally I would use the Warhammer plastic Giant kit to convert one. I once saw an awesome LoTR giant in the Darlington GW store (many, many years ago so it'll be long gone by now). Lots of furs and a long beard were sculpted onto it using greenstuff.
