Maybe Bombadil was something like Gaia for the Greeks, but not something like Gandalf, because Gandalf was afraid of the ring and could not touch it, while Bombadil could! And Bombadil also was busy with nature all the time, and didn't get wet by rain I believe.

Well, I might be a necromancer but I don't start neverendind debates ;). The truth is that Tom Bombadil was a dutch doll belongning to one of Tolkien's children and was put in Middle-earth to be a mystery.

Personnaly, I do not believe he was Eru, as it is stated that Tom always remained in ME while Eru was still outside the Universe and was the one who sent back Gandalf after his death. I like to think of Tom and Goldberry as some carefree maiar in the likeness of Radagast.

Pretty darn powerful Maia. Rocks and trees move out of the way for him, Old man willow bows to him, the dead fear him, the ring does not affect him at all(meaning he is stronger than Sauron!!) a river gave up its daughter for him, and the elves call him the First. He cannot fall to the shadow till all else is lost...

All that is what made me think that he was the embodiment of Middle Earth.

I really wish tolkien had given us more info on the origins of bombadil. It would have been really useful.

Maybe we'll learn some if we read the adventures of Tom Bombadil

The adventures of Tom Bombadil is mostly a compilation of poems, it does not provide further information on his nature. And actually Tolkien indicated in one of his letters that he did intended to keep Tom's nature a mystery just like the origin of the Hobbits. The proffessor thaught that a good mythology must have a part of unexplained mysteries.

Although I would love to know what he really was, I agree with Tolkien that he didn't told it. Because, what is life without secrets? ;)
Also it makes people look in their own fantasy to find out who or what something is and, nothing is wrong with fantasy as we all probably know! :D

well i'd hate to bring religeon into this but i would like to think of tom as a form of jesus. like lluvatar is a form of god.

John 1:1 in the begining was the word, and the word was God and the word was with God.

"Eldest, that's what I am...Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn...he knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless — before the Dark Lord came from Outside.."
—The Fellowship of the Ring

Tom says he was around before everything was created. seems to line up to me. and wasnt tolkien a christian? or something like that.
